19th-Century German School Portrait Of A GentlemanThis charming mid 19th century oil painting depicts a gentleman wearing a white shirt with a black coat and necktie. His collars are turned down and his hair is styled with a side parting. In the 1840s 50s, men tended to wear their hair covering the top of the ears, which was often accompanied by side whiskers and moustaches. Here, the young gentleman sports a beard akin to a modern day chinstrap. Quite a dapper characteristic. The portrait is signed
